Nowadays, as in the past, the public does not necessarily recognize the importance of chemistry and chemical technology. Many people tend to link this discipline with dirty, poisonous, and dangerous substances. Such an image appears to result, at least partially, from biased, provocative media coverage of accidents and environmental issues. To remedy this unfortunate situation, it is essential to convey to the public the facts about how chemistry brings amenities to everyday life and deals with environmental pollutants and other concerns.

With these factors in mind, the CSJ has been planning and organizing events that provide a good opportunity for the public to understand the status of chemistry and the chemical industry. The promotion of understanding among researchers is of course an important issue in the framework of these publicity activities.
