When Japan's new era began almost 140 years ago by opening the country to foreign countries and accepting western culture and
knowledge, Germany was the most developed country in chemistry in the world. Many
young Japanese scholars traveled to Germany to study chemistry and took leading
positions in Japan when they returned home. They have made tremendous contributions to
the development of Japan. Even after the modernization of Japan, fruitful
academic exchange between Germany and Japan has continued to this day.
From April
2005 to March 2006 will be known as "German Year in Japan". The Chemical Society
of Japan, in consultation with the German Chemical Society (Geselschaft Deutcher
Chemiker), has decided to take this opportunity to enhance the relationship between the two
countries in the field of chemistry. A makeshift executive committee was
assembled to plan and execute special programs during the 85th annual meeting of CSJ. It
was informed through GDCh that the German Research Foundation (DFG) has been generous enough
as to sponsor the dispatch of eleven renowned German scientists to Japan to give
a series of lectures. Joining them is a group of ten doctoral students and post doctoral scholars to
present their poster presentations and to stay at various institutes in Japan
for the six weeks following their presentations. The plan for the young chemists is reciprocal, allowing a group of ten
Japanese doctoral and post doctoral chemists to be sent to the occasion of the
annual meeting of GDCh in Dusseldorf in September, followed by a 6 week stay at
German institutes.
The Committee organized the Special Commemorative
Lectures, Gathering of Japanese and German Chemists (Japanisch-deutsches
Chemikertreffen) and German Street in the Exposition. The Schedule was as
follows. Pictures are available by clicking the album link.
