As you know, on Friday, March 11th Japan was hit by a massive
earthquake, the most powerful ever recorded in this country. In
particular the region north of Tokyo was devastated, however even now
the extent of the damage is not fully known. When the earthquake
occurred, there were several meetings and symposia taking place at the
CSJ building in Surugadai, Tokyo. Although the building shook
violently, there were fortunately no injuries among the employees and
visitors present. A part of ceiling panels fell, and some of cabinets
and shelves were knocked over, but all is repairable. For the time
being, we are safe.
After the quake, we received numerous emails and letters from
overseas chemical societies and others inquiring about our safety. We
were
encouraged by kind words reminding us that Japan is not alone and
there are always those who want to extend a helping hand. From the
President and the rest of us at CSJ, we thank you from the heart.
Concerning CSJ activities, while giving top priority to coming to
grips with the present circumstances, we are considering responses. In
particular we would like to decide within two or three days a course
of action for events at the Annual Conference to be held at Kanagawa
University from March 26th to the 29th.
March 13th, the Japanese government initiated rolling blackouts in order
to ensure electric power. This has had an impact on transportation
infrastructure. Amid this, the President, Senior Vice President,
Executive Director, and CSJ officials as well as staff, have been
communicating by telephone and email, and off course face to face
meeting. It is likely that information and notification will be
inadequate or late, and your understanding of the situation would be
greatly appreciated.
